UPAA Greater Los Angeles Chapter, headed by President Mutch Carino and President-Elect Ethel Rubio and Board Members Dick Cu and Bobby Canseco (also BEFAAA) hosted Dean Rizalinda de Leon and Pres. Chato Calderon for the LA leg of the US Roadshow. The event was held on October 15 at the Silver Lake Medical Center in Los Angeles, whose Chairman is BEFAAA and UPAAGLA Board Member Sonny Gancayco.

This was very successful with over 40 UP alumni and friends based in LA and surrounding areas. Many comments and support addressed the UPCOE infrastructure requirements and investments in the technological innovations.

We are grateful to the UPAAGLA for organizing the event and for mobilizing support for the upliftment of Engineering in the Philippines! To start the event, Annie Nepomuceno, a former UP Madrigal singer, serenaded the audience. Special thanks to UP alumnus Philippine Consul General Adel Cruz for gracing the event and welcoming the guests. He offered to help improve the data base of UP alumni located in Southern California, Nevada and Arizona. He also invited us to use the Consulate for the venue of our next outreach.

Mr. and Mrs. Pol (ME) and Lorna (ChE) Yson, generous donors through UPERDFI, gave their testimony on why they are giving back to the college. They have so much to be thankful for the excellent education they got from UP. They also understand the financial needs of the less-resourced students, so they are sharing their blessings in America.

Message from our Partners:
Oh what an incredible Monday night! I am very proud to share that the UP Alumni Association of Greater Los Angeles (UPAAGLA) successfully hosted the Los Angeles leg of the UP College of Engineering’s Search for the 1st UP Unicorn US Roadshow!

Thrilled to host the UP College of Engineering Dean Rizalinda De Leon and Chato Calderon, the President of the UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc. (UPERDFI) as they made their last stop in Los Angeles to share about the current state and advancements at the UPCOE and exciting start-up projects that are currently incubating in the Diliman Campus.

With the mission and goal of improving the Philippine competitiveness in the global market and the collective prosperity of the Filipino people, UPERDFI rolled out Strategies and Activities on how to assist the UPCOE faculty and students to commercialize technological advances and transform engineers to technopreneurs.

A Unicorn is a term coined for a start-up company with a billion dollars in value such as Uber, Airbnb, etc. Both Dean De Leon and Chato are very excited to engage alums and friends to share their time, talent and wealth to support in UPCOE’s search of the 1st UP Unicorn.

Honored to have the Philippine Consul General Adel Cruz who is a fellow UP alum grace the event to help welcome our guests of honor. Thank you to Annie Nepomuceno, also a fellow UP alum and gifted artist for a powerful rendition of a Ryan Cayabyab original, “Sabihin Mo Ikaw ay Pilipino.”

I am very encouraged to see alumni and friends who turned up and supported the event. Great to see new and familiar faces. I look forward to seeing everyone on future UPAAGLA events especially when my term as the President of UPAAGLA begins next year.

As the UPAAGLA President-Elect, I would like to extend special thanks to all the volunteers who made this event happen: Fellow Board Members Gil Guinto, Mary Drees, Benny Uy, Annie Nepomuceno, Dick Cu, Sonny Gancayco, Bobby Canseco and Mutch Carino, the UPAAGLA President.

Ethel Rubio
President-elect, UPAAGLA

Congratulations on your great presentations! Your messages were loud and clear but more importantly, so noble and lofty for UP and country. May your tribe grow and flourish.

On behalf of UPAAGLA, our president, Mutch Carino is looking forward to discussing with you relative to sharing our humble resources in pursuit of your objectives. And, of course, we will be so honored again if you choose UPAAGLA as your hosts in your return visits to Los Angeles.

We will treasure the 3 mementos, bag, pin and cap, you gave us. Thank you.

Dick Cu
UPAAGLA
